The primary purpose of this position is to assist in implementing the ecological programs to maintain a viable and dynamic forest system on a National Forest. Learn more about this agency Responsibilities Assists in implementing the ecological programs to maintain a viable and dynamic forest system on a National Forest. Monitors and evaluates the effects of management decisions on forest land and surrounding communities. Analyzes and determines impact of unit programs on compliance with Federal, state, and local laws, policies, and regulations. Provides input for short and long-term planning for budgetary and compliance requirements. Analyzes portions of the ecosystem components and processes within forested areas and neighboring forest and adjacent communities to determine the effects of management activities. Assists in developing mitigating solutions to actions resulting from adverse effect on the forest system/lands. Participates in the development of a long-term monitoring system to collect baseline data to quantitatively evaluate the processes within the system. Assists in the evaluation of ecological conditions in remnant late successional forests to meet the desired objectives of the management plan. Works with the forest fire or wildland fire specialist to determine the role of fire dependent regimes and develops mitigation for the processes that may not be desired. Assists in conducting portions of ecological studies of the vegetation, soil, and environmental characteristics of the zone or forest from which ecological classifications are produced, which provides basic understanding of ecosystems as well as land management and planning information. Coordinates with the timber management unit in areas that influence processes of the community. Coordinates with the reforestation unit to evaluate processes that affect development of younger-aged forest stands. Assists others in evaluating and analyzing processes that interact with or affect adjacent areas to the forest communities. Incorporates data into the Geographic Information System or similar technology. Reviews proposed projects to determine impacts and suggest mitigation actions to minimize ecological impacts. Assists in managing the forest inventory program to collect data applicable to the management of the forest stands. Incorporates information into the planning process and the geographic information system. Travel Required Occasional travel - You may be expected to travel for this position. Basic Requirements: Bachelor's Degree: Field of science underlying ecological research that included at least 30 semester hours in basic and applied biological sciences. These hours must have included at least 9 semester hours in ecology, and 12 semester hours in physical and mathematical sciences. -OR In addition to the basic requirements, the following additional education and/or experience are qualifying. ----- GS-09: (1) One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-07 grade level. Specialized experience is defined as: Served as an advanced trainee specializing in ecology and performed common qualitative and quantitative analysis of ecosystems; and/or assisted in carrying out a range of analytical/scientific ecological assignments that included researching and analyzing data, issues, and information that supported ecosystem management recommendations. -OR Successful completion of 2 years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a master's degree or masters or equivalent graduate degree, courses are to be related to the position to be filled. -OR A combination of education and experience listed above. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Education This job does not have an education qualification requirement. Additional information PLEASE NOTE: This vacancy is being used to fill positions for FY2020 Temporary Employment Hiring season. This position is temporary, has a Not-to-Exceed date and will be filled for up to 6 months or as a not to exceed (NTE) 1 year, however an extension of the appointment may be possible without further competition. The appointment may also end early due to lack of work or lack of funds. The number and location of positions to be filled will be dependent upon individual unit needs. Pay rates vary depending on location and may be higher or lower than the amount shown. Please visit the Office of Personnel Management's website for additional information on pay rates.
