Summary The City of Bend is excited to announce recruitment for a full-time Streets Utility Worker I position in the Streets and Operations Department.--This opportunity is an FLSA non-exempt (overtime eligible), fully benefit eligible position and is--represented by the City of Bend Employee Association (COBEA), serving as a model for accomplishing the visions and goals of the Department and City through excellent internal and external customer service,--team work--and--producing excellent quality results. The City of Bend Streets and Operations Department team performs a large variety of tasks that enhance and maintain city streets for vehicles, bicycle and pedestrian traffic. Incumbent(s) may not be required to perform all duties listed and may be required to perform additional, position-specific duties. Operates and drives a variety of machinery, vehicles, and equipment, ranging from light to heavy, in order to complete a variety of activities and tasks, which may include: laying out and installing markings for crosswalks and parking spaces; removing snow; applying sand, cinder, and/or de-icing chemicals to roadways; applying chip seal; and/or, performing other related activities. Performs a variety of grounds maintenance activities, which may include: removing weeds, dead trees, and trash from grounds; mowing, thatching, fertilizing, and aerating grass areas; monitoring irrigation system; trimming trees and shrubs; removing snow from sidewalks and streets; removing graffiti from public areas; assisting with the planting of landscape items; and/or, performing other related activities. Performs preventative maintenance and minor repair activities to applicable vehicles and equipment utilized in day-to-day activities. Prepares and maintains a variety of records and logs regarding daily activities. Participates in the maintenance and upgrading of streets, which may include: upgrading storm drains; resurfacing roads; sealing cracks in street surfaces; applying chip seal; and/or, performing other related activities. Performs traffic control during street maintenance and repair activities. Installs a variety of traffic signage and thermoplastic legends to enhance roadway safety. Complies with safety requirements of the position and actively promotes safe work practices. Responds to system maintenance and or service calls outside scheduled work hours while on call or in the event of an emergency. In an emergency event or an officially declared State of Emergency, responds as directed to ensure the restoration of essential public services, facilities and infrastructure. Performs other duties of a similar nature or level. Knowledge, Skills and Qualifications Knowledge of: ------------------ Applicable state and local vehicle ordinances; ------------------ Basic street construction and maintenance practices; ------------------ Equipment, tools, and materials of the trade; ------------------ Occupational hazards and related safety precautions; ------------------ Variety of hand and power tools; ------------------ Safe work practices. Skill in: ------------------ Performing manual labor; ------------------ Maintaining a variety of equipment and trucks; ------------------ Operating and driving a variety of light to heavy equipment; ------------------ Completing paperwork and documentation; ------------------ Performing semi-skilled maintenance and repair activities; ------------------ Operating small hand and power tools and other related equipment; ------------------ Understanding and carrying out written and oral instructions; ------------------ Communication, interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with coworkers, supervisor, the general public, etc. sufficient to exchange or convey information and to receive work direction. -- Education, Experience, Certifications and Licenses Required: High School Diploma or equivalent (G.E.D.); or, an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above.
