Job Description:

The Oregon Military Department is a state agency that supports the Oregon National Guard.

The Oregon Military Department is recruiting for 2 Group Life Coordinator 2's (GLC2). These are permanent full-time state positions located at the Oregon Youth Challenge Program in Bend, Oregon.

These positions are represented by the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees' (AFSCME) union.

What you will be doing:

We are looking for people with outstanding qualities of leadership, integrity, moral character, professionalism and physical fitness to perform the following major duties:

These positions are responsible for the care, control, safety, security, and Life Plan guidance of all the students in the program. Ensures the safety of students and that those duties are performed in a consistent manner, supporting other staff members. Ensures policies, procedures and standards of the OYCP are adhered to. Responsible to support the "Cadet Action Plan", emphasizing the 8 core components in all activities throughout the 22 weeks. March students to and from all destinations, adhering to D & C standards. "Calls" cadence; physically participates in extensive running with students. Supervises reveille, retreat and PT. This includes all aspects of group living, both at and away from the facility, active participation with Platoon incentive trips and community service projects. Follow the Plan of the Day. Supervise students and emphasize safety, personal growth, teamwork, character development and general acceptable behavior. Communicate with the GLC 3's and GLC Supervisors about student illnesses, parent and doctor recommendations.

Maintain facility security and supervise building maintenance to be performed by students, to include laundry. Assist in maintaining health and safety standards within OYCP. Coordinate with other staff to ensure adequate visual supervision of the students at all times for safety and security. Maintain communication with other staff concerning any problem/potential problems with students. Refer issues specific to physical or sexual abuse, or those of a sensitive nature, to the duty Counselor. Make recommendations to the Platoon Leaders for platoon incentives and awards. Responsible to fill out personal time sheets correctly and turn in bi-monthly. Works with cadets defining and attaining weekly goals. Learn and actively participate in student homework sessions. Observe and report any negative behavioral changes to GLC Supervisors and talk with cadets to ascertain reasons for negative behavior changes. Review student CAP periodically. Grade students daily and review grades with cadets. Talk with cadets about positive plans. Dispense student medications in accordance with existing policies and procedures.

Working Conditions:

Occasional lifting and physical exertion is necessary to perform assigned tasks and duties. Occasional exposure to adverse weather and environmental conditions. Required to work various shifts; days, swing, graveyard, weekends and holidays and subject to occational overnight travel. May come in contact with irrate students, parents and the general public. Required to transport students in State-owned vehicles. Extensive walking, regular marching, and extensive running with students. Position requires being on your feet and standing for entire 8 hour shifts. Schedule changes are frequent due to limited resources, National Guardsmen driils, illness, vacation.

Work Experience

Work experience is based on a 40-hour work week. (Example: 20 hours a week for one year would equal six-months of work experience.)

What you need to qualify:

You are at least 21 years of age;

* AND -

Have a High School Diploma or Equivalent. (You MUST attach a copy of your High School Diploma or Equivalent to this application).

* AND -

Have one (1) year of experience observing, evaluating and monitoring human behavior, providing oversight and maintaining discipline in a civilian or military residential/barracks living environment, a school, treatment or corrections environment;

* AND -

Must be able to pass a physical fitness standard in accordance with program requirements as stated below:

Run: Males - 12 minute mile; Females- 14 minute mile

Sit-ups: 30

Push-ups: Males - 25; Females -10

Ladder climb: (Pass/Fail)

Sit/Stand/Bend/Reach: (Pass/Fail)

Drag 150 pounds: (75 ft in 2 min)

NOTE: Course work in behavioral or social science or closely related field can substitute for up to six (6) months of experience. (You MUST attach a copy of your transcripts to this application to receive credit).

OR

You are at least 21 years of age;

* AND -

Have a High School Diploma or Equivalent. (You MUST attach a copy of your High School Diploma or Equivalent to this application

* AND-

Have one (1) year of experience in a military or quasi-military type/style of troop leadership and/or military experience at the E-3 grade or above as represented on the Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty, DD Form 214. (You MUST attach your military documents to the veteran preference section of your application);

* AND -

Must be able to pass a physical fitness standard in accordance with program requirements as stated below:

Run: Males - 12 minute mile; Females- 14 minute mile

Only applicants that most closely meet the Agency's needs will be invited for interviews.

Preference may be given to individuals with military experience.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

Possess and maintain a valid driver license;

Pass a fingerprint-based criminal background check;

All employees in this classification/position, shall be subject to testing for the use of prohibited drugs and must pass a pre-employment drug screening test.

Conditions of Employment:

Must obtain (within 6 months of hire) and maintain a CPR/First Aid Certification;

Must obtain (within 90 days of hire) and maintain a Commercial Driver License (CDL);

Employee is required to maintain a drug/alcohol free workplace in accordance with the applicable collective bargaining agreement;

Must maintain physical fitness standards as described above (tested annually);

Maintain military style grooming standards;

Wear a modified military BDU uniform and safety equipment as required.

Requested Skills:

* Experience observing, evaluating and monitoring human behavior and providing oversight;

* Experience maintaining discipline of individuals in a residential, correctional, probation/parole or military setting;

* Applicable experience and knowledge in an instructional setting;

* Experience with successful training of "At Risk" youth;
