DEPARTMENT SUMMARY: The Medical Surgical Services, Intensive Care Unit, and Patient Care Support departments ensure the provision of 24/7 specialized care for patients across the continuum of care required in the acute hospital setting.

POSITION OVERVIEW: The Nurse Manager directs the delivery of professional nursing services for assigned units. This position is responsible for the overall planning, budgeting, staffing, performance, and operations of departments in conjunction and collaboration with the Bend/Redmond Acute Care Services and Critical Care Services Directors. The Inpatient Nurse Manager is responsible for all performance and annual review of direct reports. This position will directly supervise assigned caregivers on the Medical Surgical floor, the Intensive Care Unit, and through the Patient Care Support cost centers.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND DUTIES:

Oversee the operations of assigned departments to ensure smooth and efficient department operations and that resources are available in the assigned units 24/7. Collaborates with other staff members to facilitate provision of patient care. Ensures adequate departmental staffing to provide safe patient care through review of appropriate data, development and maintenance of master schedules.

Acts as the department liaison to other hospital departments and outside entities.

Responsible for resource management ensuring appropriate and sufficient equipment and supplies are available. Manages staffing and scheduling (control of master schedule; ETO & LOA approval; light duty scheduling) - delegates related clerical functions to admin assistant and/or other applicable staff.

Serves as a real-time resource and assists with clinical expertise for staff with problem-solving on patient care, processes, and family issues. Serves as representative for all customers.

Maintains ongoing communication with staff, department leadership, and others to ensure needs are being met for staff and patients. Engages medical staff to obtain input on the operation of the department and key decisions.

Role models two-way communication of the SCHS mission, vision, values, and strategic plan for the department (staff meetings, rounds, tiered huddles, etc.)

Coordinates quality initiatives and process improvements. Aligns and manages to St. Charles Health System metrics and quality initiatives. Oversees trending of quality and financial indicators including LOS with case manager support.

Facilitates department meetings and shared governance/leadership efforts.

Responsible for budget development, regular monitoring, accountability and meeting all operational targets for all areas within span of control. Manages operations within the budget. Provides productivity oversight and review. Works with leadership to achieve productivity standards. Develops and implements annual plan including goals for unit with director and Assistant Nurse Manager. Controls and maintains position control including the addition and deletion of positions related to budget and human resource needs.

Manages time and resources efficiently to maximize productivity and avoid unnecessary personnel expenditures.

Hires, directs, coaches and monitors the performance of all direct reports, to develop and maintain a high-performance team that meets organizational and department goals. Responsible for performance and annual review of direct reports. Complies with Human Resource processes and controls.

Monitors and ensures all direct reports are current with compliance and safety requirements. Implements and manages all organizational safety directives and goals.

Provides and oversees team's delivery of customer service in a manner that promotes goodwill, is timely, efficient, and accurate.

Communicates (both written and orally) effectively and maintains professional relationships with caregivers, medical staff, patients, guests and other hospital departments.

Responsible for quality, safety, customer service, regulatory, and compliance oversight.

Creates and fosters a healing environment that supports all aspects of the care environment and the wholeness of each individual, patient, and caregiver.

Oversees staff documentation for patient care to ensure proficiency in compliance with hospital policies and regulatory agencies.

Facilitates the growth and development of a culturally competent team in the provision of appropriate care to patients and family members who belong to diverse cultural backgrounds and experiences.

Provides and oversees team's delivery of customer service in a manner that promotes goodwill, is timely, efficient, and accurate.

Collaborates with teams to review processes and identify/implement opportunities for improvements, applying Value Improvement Practice concepts and tools.

Creates a healing environment that supports all aspects of care, respects the wholeness of the individual, and demonstrates therapeutic presence through attitudes and behaviors that enhance the care experience for patients and caregivers.

EDUCATION

Required: Graduate of an accredited school of nursing. BSN or Bachelor's degree in related field

Preferred: Master's degree in related field

LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION/REGISTRATION

Required: Current licensure with the Oregon State Board of Nursing

Valid Oregon driver's license and ability to meet St. Charles Health System driving requirements

Ability to travel to business functions/trainings/meetings at all St. Charles Health System worksites

Preferred: Experience in both medical surgical and critical care nursing. Advanced Certification in clinical or leadership specialty. (e.g. CCRN, NE-BC, etc.)

EXPERIENCE

Required: 5 years nursing experience, of which 1 year should be progressively more responsible experience relating to a management role.

Preferred: Experience relating to a specialty area of nursing.

PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT

Must be able to wear appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) required to perform the job safely.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Continually (75% or more): Use of clear and audible speaking voice and the ability to hear normal speech level.
