Upon hire, must pass criminal and/or driving history; only information relevant to the position will be considered.Essential Functions: Projects and AssignmentsOversee schedule and projects for student reporters and photographers and freelance contributors. Assign or approve story and photo assignments for reporters and photographers, including staff and freelance contributors. Set deadlines for student reporters and photographers and communicate challenges to Editor-in-Chief to ensure content creation is taking place consistently and at the appropriate level. Actively recruit new student reporters and contributors.Edit content for clarity, structure, AP style, grammar, punctuation. Create content, including news, opinion and photography, as needed on an occasional basis.General Office DutiesMeet regularly with the Editor-in-Chief and Engagement Editor to coordinate on upcoming assignments, coverage, issues and opportunities. In absence of Editor in Chief, run weekly staff meetings and fill in other Editor in Chief duties. Work alongside the Engagement Editor and with involvement from other staff to ensure all content is shared in an appropriate and timely manner on social media channels, The Broadside website and in special print publications. Coach and train reporters on best practices for reporting, including interviewing skills, writing techniques and beat management. Work with the Engagement Editor to ensure The Broadsides website is updated on a daily basis on weekdays, either by posting or scheduling content for publication. Perform other duties as assigned that support the overall objective of the position.Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Individuals must possess these knowledge, skills and abilities or be able to explain and demonstrate that the individual can perform these essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation, using some other combination of skills and abilities. The individual is expected to follow College work rules and policies.Skill in the operation of modern office equipment, software systems and standard office equipment, internet searches, Microsoft applications (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint) and systems or software unique to the assigned area.Knowledge of the field of journalism, especially in an online news environment, and familiar with news from various sources. Ability to observe, direct and oversee student reporters and photographers, working with students representing a wide variety of backgrounds, abilities and learning styles. Skill in problem-solving, multi-tasking, organization and time management. Ability to communicate effectively with public, COCC staff, students, and others. Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, using English language with or without the use of auxiliary aids or an interpreter. Ability as a self-starter, able to work independently while also being receptive to guidance and feedback from others.Ability to develop cooperative working relationships with people from different cultural backgrounds and other aspects of human diversity. Willingness and ability to travel to off-site locations and branch campus, as required.Physical Demands and Other Ergonomic Requirements: Work hours are determined by the supervisor and vary based on business needs and locations. Position assignments may be assigned an alternate schedule to service the campus needs. Work is performed typically indoors in an office environment engaged in work of primarily a sedentary nature. Requires the ability to sit or stand at workstation for extended periods. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, use hands and fingers, handle or feel objects, tools or controls, reach with hands and arms. Requires near visual acuity to read written materials, write and read computer screens. Requires sufficient hearing and speech ability, for ordinary telephonic conversations. Occasional lifting up to 25lbs. Demonstrated leadership experience such as serving as a manager, captain or team leader in a professional school, work or organization environment. Experience with AP Style as it applies to journalistic writing and publicationExperience with website content management systems.Experience with editing social media platforms including Facebook, Instagram and Snapchat. Experience with or training on Google Sheets for content planning.The College recognizes the value of skills and knowledge gained outside of formal higher education and paid employment. Experience with retouch, resize and enhance images as needed using Photoshop or other photography software. Experience working with WordPress content management system.
