The job: The geologist specialist assists in the development of geotechnical and hazardous materials investigation programs by conducting surface and subsurface geotechnical (soil/rock) investigations, and provides sources of construction materials for transportation facilities construction and maintenance. In this role, the successful candidate will perform geologic reconnaissance, collect soil/rock samples, analyze and interpret geologic and hydrologic data, produce maps and cross sections for contract plans, write memos and technical reports that describe conditions, and provide construction and maintenance recommendations. What you will be doing: Perform surface and subsurface investigations. Determine field investigation strategies and monitor and oversee operation of the drill personnel and equipment during the geologic investigation. Perform fieldwork and reconnaissance to collect engineering geology data. Oversee consultant geotechnical drill crews in the proper installation of slope inclinometers, piezometers, settlement measuring instruments and water level monitoring equipment. Write technical reports. Sample and conduct field-tests on construction materials such as soils and rock, using scales, sieves and shakers, hammers, probes, pocket penetrometers and torvanes. Review potential material sources to ensure quality and quantity of materials. Prepare maps with survey instruments and CADD (Microstation) to develop site operation plans and specifications. Coordinate less complex material source development with external stakeholders. Perform hazardous materials level 1 and level 2 site assessments, hazmat data evaluation and report preparation, hazmat clean-up and site remediation for support to construction and maintenance projects and to ensure regulatory compliance. Assist with solid waste permits. Provide technical assistance and assists in presenting hazardous materials information in interactions with consultants, the public, and other agencies. This position requires frequent travel with overnight stays. Exposure to active construction sites, hazardous materials, heavy construction equipment and drills, at sites where blasting with high explosives is occurring, working in and around heavy traffic, and working in remote locations. Fieldwork requires exposure to adverse site and weather conditions in the severe climate of Central and Eastern Oregon. Requires working within the rail road right of way, regular monitoring of instrumentation and regular working around heavy drilling. You must have: A Geologist in Training registration from the Oregon State Board of Geologist Examiners (OSBGE). AND Two (2) years of experience applying geology theory, principles, standards and methods to real world situations in a business setting. You will be required to use a vehicle to conduct business. You must possess and maintain a valid driver license and acceptable driving record. Your license does not have to be issued in Oregon to be considered. Knowledge and experience in engineering geology and hazardous materials exploration sampling and field-testing techniques as it relates to development, construction and maintenance of transportation facilities. Knowledge and experience in safety procedures at construction project sites which includes uneven or steep terrain, hazardous materials, busy highway traffic and heavy construction equipment. Ability to work in close coordination with other geo professionals. Experience working effectively in multidisciplinary teams, demonstrating ability to prioritize work to meet project scope, schedule and budget.
