There is ONE vacancy that will be either aPsychologist or a Social Worker.As a Licensed Provider for the Department of Veterans Affairs, youwill practice independently in the provision of psychologicalservices, engage in professional and scientific work which relatesto behavior, capacities, personality, interests, emotions and mentaldisorders, consulting with peers and supervisors as appropriate.PLEASE NOTE: Qualified clinical trainees, residents, fellows,interns, etc. are encouraged to apply; please follow theinstructions in the How to Apply section.The Mental Health Division (MHD) utilizes an interdisciplinary teammodel of patient care to deliver biopsychosocial treatment forVeterans, with MHD psychologists functioning as core members ofthese treatment teams. Staff psychologists diagnose mentaldisorders, conduct psychological and/or neuropsychologicalassessments, treat mental disorders through a variety of modalitiesand provide adjunctive interventions for treatment of medicaldisorders. Among the modalities provided are individual, family andgroup psychotherapies, and other interventions such as biofeedback,psychological hypnosis, and environmental interventions; specialtyinterventions required special privileging. They consult withmedical center staff on a wide variety of patient care issues.The current position will be associated with the Primary Care-MentalHealth Integration (PCMHI) team. The incumbent will provideshort-term, evidenced-based individual and group treatments, receivewarm hand-offs from PCPs, provide consultation to nursing andmedical staff, and help to build a strong emphasis upon preventivemedicine services and treatment of behavioral health concerns. Theincumbent may also participate in the training of interns andfellows. Staff psychologists may be involved in program evaluationand/or research activities. The specialty area of the degree must be consistentwith the assignment for which the applicant is to be employed.OR, have a doctoral degree in any area of psychology and, inaddition, successfully completed a respecialization programmeeting both of the following conditions: a) therespecialization program must be completed in an APA or a CPAaccredited doctoral program; and b) the specialty in which youwere retrained is consistent with the assignment you are amapplying for; OR, have a doctoral degree awarded between 1951and 1978 from a regionally-accredited institution, with adissertation primarily psychological in nature.- **Internship Requirement** - You must have successfullycompleted a professional psychology internship training programthat was accredited by APA or CPA at the time the program wascompleted and that is consistent with the assignment for whichthe applicant is to be employed; OR, New VHA psychologyinternship programs that are in the process of applying for APAaccreditation are acceptable in fulfillment of the internshiprequirement, provided that such programs were sanctioned by theVHA Central Office Program Director for Psychology and the VHAOffice of Academic Affiliations at the time that the individualwas an intern; OR, VHA facilities that offered full-time,one-year pre-doctoral internships prior to PL 96-151 (pre-1979)are considered to be acceptable in fulfillment of the internshiprequirement; OR, Applicants who completed an internship that wasnot accredited by APA or CPA at the time the program wascompleted may be considered eligible for hire only if they arecurrently board certified by the American Board of ProfessionalPsychology in a specialty area that is consistent with theassignment for which the applicant is to be employed. (NOTE:Once board certified, the employee is required to maintain boardcertification). NOTE: Applicants who have a doctoral degreeawarded between 1951 and 1978 from a regionally-accreditedinstitution with a dissertation primarily psychological innature may fulfill this internship requirement by having theequivalent of a one-year supervised internship experience in asite specifically acceptable to the candidate's doctoralprogram. If the internship experience is not noted on theapplicant's official transcript, the applicant must provide astatement from the doctoral program verifying that theequivalent of a one-year supervised internship experience wascompleted in a site acceptable to the doctoral program.- **Licensure**: Candidates must hold a full, current, andunrestricted license to practice psychology at the doctorallevel in a State, Territory or Commonwealth of the UnitedStates, or the District of Columbia.- Exception: Non-licensed applicants who otherwise meet theeligibility requirements may be given a temporaryappointment as a "graduate psychologist" at the GS-11 orGS-12 grade under the authority of 38 U.S.C. 7405 (c)(2)(B)for a period not to exceed two years from the date ofemployment on the condition that such a psychologist providecare only under the supervision of a psychologist who islicensed. Failure to obtain licensure during that period isjustification for termination of the temporary appointment.- **Experience:** In additional to meeting the basic requirementsas stated above, you must have the following:- GS-11 Level: no additional experience beyond the basicrequirement- GS-12 Level: at least 1 full year of experience as aprofessional psychologist equivalent to the GS-11 level, andare able to demonstrate the following knowledge, skills andabilities:1. Knowledge of and ability to apply a wide range ofprofessional psychological treatments or assessmentmethods to a variety of patient populations.2. Ability to design and implement effective treatmentstrategies.3. Ability to incorporate new clinical procedures.4. Ability to conduct research activities, such asdesigning and implementing clinical research projects(staff psychologists with specified research jobduties).5. Ability to perform basic research tasks of scholarshipand research execution within the context of anestablished research team, including researchparticipant relations, research documentation, dataacquisition, maintenance, and collaboration.- GS-13 Level: at least 2 addition years of experience, withat least one year equivalent to the GS-12 level, as aprofessional psychologist that was obtained throughemployment as a psychologist or through participating in asupervised post-doctoral psychology training program thatdemonstrates 1) active professional practice that waspaid/non-paid employment and/or 2) a full, current andunrestricted license. To be creditable, the experience musthave required the use of knowledge, skills, abilities andother characteristics associated with current psychologypractice:1. Knowledge of, and ability to apply, professionalpsychological treatments to a full range of patientpopulations.2. Ability to provide professional advice and consultationin areas related to professional psychology andbehavioral health.3. Knowledge of clinical research literature.\*Experience is only creditable if it is post-doctoral degreeexperience as a professional psychologist directly related to theduties performed.**Preferred Experience:** Previous work within a PC clinic,background in PCMHI and providing brief interventions to patients.**Reference:** VA Regulations, specifically VA Handbook 5005, PartII, Appendix G18 Psychologist Qualification Standard.
